Richard Katz is a distinguished professional with a career spanning over four decades. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1981, Rich began his career with NCR’s healthcare division and Nichols Institute Laboratories. In 1991, he joined Therapeutic Associates Inc. (TAI), a therapist-owned, multi-clinic private practice, where he played a pivotal role in navigating the challenges posed by the advent of managed care.
Rich's expertise in marketing, contracting, and negotiating with health plans and PPOs was instrumental in organizing regional therapists into a provider-owned and operated Independent Practice Association (IPA). As Executive Director of the Northwest Rehab Alliance (NWRA), Rich led the charge in delivering coverage and administrative services to health plans across the Northwest. Under his leadership, NWRA implemented delegated credentialing, standardized payor reports, and in-house quality improvement programs that utilized outcome measures and clinical practice guidelines. These initiatives attracted contracts and ensured equitable reimbursement for NWRA's members.
“Rich has been generous with his time, knowledge, and expertise to other physical therapy owners and APTA Private Practice members from around the country. He has presented at APTA Private Practice meetings, written for APTA Private Practice publications, and collaborates regularly with leaders of other physical therapy IPAs hosting a “network of networks” meeting annually at the APTA Private Practice Annual Conference. He is also actively teaching the next generation of PTs about the complexities of our healthcare reimbursement system at several PT programs in our region.” -
Todd Gifford PT (CEO of TheraputicAssociates Physical Therapy)Throughout his 32-year tenure at TAI, Rich oversaw the expansion of the company from 16 clinics to 100. His leadership of NWRA grew to support 440 clinics and nearly 1,600 credentialed providers. Rich's influence extended beyond the Northwest as he consulted nationally and internationally with other therapy networks. He also contributed articles to APTA Private Practice’s Impact magazine and presented at APTA Private Practice annual conferences, as well as in the UK for PhysioFirst.
“I cannot think of anyone more deserving than Rich Katz and without reservation recommend the acknowledgement of his contributions to the success of private practice over three decades.” -
